in the latest New7Wonders ranking Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park makes it to the TOP 7

September 30, 2008

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan province has topped the latest ranking of the nominees vying to become the New7Wonders of  Nature.

As of September 29, the Puerto Princesa treasure climbed to the top spot from 5th place, according to the New7Wonders of Nature Campaign site.

It dislodged Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, Beach, which slipped to No. 3.

Aside from the Subterranean River National Park, three of Philipine nominees were also included on the top 11 list.

These were Bohol’s Chocolate Hills (4th place, up from 11th), Tubbataha Reef off Sulu Sea (5th place, up from 19th), and Legazpi City’s Mayon Volcano (11th place, down from 10th).

The Department of Tourism urged all Filipinos to continue voting online for the Philippine wonders to ensure that one of the country’s nominees would proceed to the next level in 2009.

By Jan. 1, 2009, only one national nominee per country, the highest ranked in the voting on Dec. 31, 2008.  will be allowed to proceed, according to New7Wonders Web site.

"Therefore until the end of 2008, countries with more than one national nominee will be racing to choose the national representative that is allowed to continue into 2009. Nominees shared by more than one country will remain and continue into 2009," the Web site said.

Online voting for nominees will continue up until July 7, 2009. The New7Wonders of Nature panel of experts will then review the top 77 nominees.

Among the 77, only 21 nominees will be chosen as finalists. The list finalists will be disclosed on July 21, 2009. The 21 finalists will then be put to popular vote, the Web site added.

King James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first conference title ever this year. When not on the court, James oversees construction of his 35,000-square-foot home outside of Cleveland, which includes a bowling alley, casino and barber shop. This year the cycling aficionado also acquired a minority stake in Cannondale, manufacturer of high-performance bicycles.

2. Reggie Bush, $24 million
Born: March 2, 1985

Bush entered the NFL last year with a Heisman Trophy and a scintillating game that had companies lining up to have him sponsor their products. Deals with Adidas, Subway, Pepsi and EA Sports net Bush $5 million annually. His big money comes from his contract with the New Orleans Saints, spanning six years and worth as much as $62 million. Last year Bush earned $19 million in base salary and bonuses from the deal

3. Maria Sharapova, $23 million
Born: April 19, 1987

Tennis’ "It" girl struggled with injuries in 2007, winning only one tournament and banking $1.7 million on the court. That’s down from five tourney wins and $3.8 million in prize money the previous year. Not to worry, Sharapova’s endorsement portfolio is one of the strongest in sports. This year she added Pepsi as a sponsor to an already impressive roster that includes Nike, Canon, Colgate-Palmolive and Motorola.

4. Michelle Wie, $19 million
Born: Oct. 11, 1989

Wie showed incredible promise in 2006, finishing in the top five in three of the four Grand Slam events. The only other golfer to do that: Tiger Woods. But this year injuries often kept the 17-year-old wunderkind off the course. In the fall, she enrolled at Stanford where she is not eligible to play on the golf team because of her professional status. With endorsement deals worth $16 million a year, she shouldn’t have a problem with the university’s $33,000 annual tuition.

5. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen, $17 million each
Born: June 13, 1986

The petite twins lord over Dualstar, the largest star-driven ‘tween merchandising empire on the planet outside of Disney. Mary-Kate and Ashley merchandise retails at Wal-Mart; their new high-end Elizabeth & James sportswear is available at Neiman Marcus. Not that the twins have given up acting. Mary-Kate has an extended role on Showtime’s Weeds, and generated headlines for her on-camera kiss with Ben Kingsley in the Sundance film The Wackness. Ashley is filming The Informers with Winona Ryder.

6. Daniel Radcliffe, $15 million
Born: July 23, 1989

Better known as the title character of the Harry Potter film franchise, Radcliffe generated a media frenzy this year after he appeared onstage nude in a West End revival of Equus. The fifth Potter film, this summer’s The Order of the Phoenix, grossed $938 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year. Since his 2001 foray into wizardry at age 12, both Radcliffe and his paycheck have matured remarkably. The actor was offered a reported $145,000 for The Sorcerer’s Stone six years ago. His most recent role earned an estimated $14 million.

7. Hilary Duff, $12 million
Born: Sept. 28, 1987

The pop star-actress-’tween merchandise mogul has replaced the Olsen Twins as your teenage daughter’s favorite. Her Stuff by Hilary Duff line of apparel and accessories is sold at Kohl’s, Target and Claire’s. Duff also licenses her name to footwear company Candie’s and Electronic Arts, which made her a character in the Sims videogame franchise. In April, she released her sixth studio album, Dignity, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard pop charts. Look for her in next spring’s action flick War, Inc., opposite John Cusack.

8. Avril Lavigne, $12 million
Born: Sept. 27, 1984

The decidedly less-sullen Canadian songstress released her third album, The Best Damn Thing, in April; to date the Billboard-topping album has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. And in a nod to the value of the international music market, "Girlfriend," the album’s catchy first single, was recorded in seven additional languages, including Mandarin and German. The video for that song is the second most-watched video in history on YouTube.com.

9. Carmelo Anthony, $10 million
Born: May 29, 1984

Anthony took his game to a new level last season as he finished second in the NBA in scoring to Kobe Bryant. He averaged career highs in points, assists, rebounds and steals. This year Anthony kicked off a five-year, $80 million contract with the Denver Nuggets that he signed in the summer of 2006. His biggest endorsement deal is a six-year contract he signed with Nike when he entered the league in 2003, worth $3 million annually.

10. Keira Knightley, $9 million
Born: March 26, 1985

Knightley became a bona fide star as a result of her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, though she wasn’t paid like one. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer locked her in to the first two films at scale; Knightley finally finagled a raise, to $5 million, for this summer’s At World’s End. The new face of Chanel, Knightley recently wrapped filming on The Edge of Love, about poet Dylan Thomas’ lovers, with Sienna Miller. In May Knightley won a $6,000 libel award against The Daily Mail after the British paper insinuated the reed-thin actress was anorexic.

10 Secrets You Aren’t Supposed to Know from the hit HEROES series

1. Good Is Going Evil, and Evil Is Going Good: Our beloved Peter Petrelli, aka Milo Ventimiglia, revealed: "It’s not clearly defined in this volume who’s bad and who’s necessarily good. I think a lot of people who have been perceived to be bad could possibly be good, and I think a lot of people that are good could possibly be bad." Hmm…Why do the names Sylar and Peter pop to mind?

2. Linderman Is Back and Recruiting Villains: Malcolm McDowell’s mysterious and powerful Linderman, who has the power to heal, returns from the dead this season (Nathan is the first to see him). Malcolm told me, "I work with Cristine Rose, who plays Angela Petrelli, and I work with Brea Grant, who plays Daphne, Miss Speedy. She’s great; I recruit her. Oh, and I work with Robert Forster, who is Arthur Petrelli." Wait a minute, in a flashback or a future scene? That’s a juicy bit to chomp on!

3. Hiro Has His Mind Wiped: In an upcoming episode, Hiro thinks he’s 10, which means Ando has to save the world and babysit at the same time. No dessert until you save the world, little Hiro!

4. Peter and Sylar Will Be Working Together: Milo spilled that there will be unlikely alliances this year as well: "There are moments where Sylar and Peter are surprisingly working together, oddly enough. But these two guys can’t deny who they are at their cores. They are yin to yang." I’m also hearing that HRG will be partnering up with someone you would never expect…

5. Alert Child Services: Sylar’s Going to Have a Baby! According to sources, the creepiest mother-killer around, Sylar, has a son in the future. Apparently his son is "gifted" in many ways, and his first name is Noah, just like HRG. Quite an interesting namesake, don’t you think? Any bets on the baby mama? All I can tell you is that I’m pretty sure she will make a lot of you fans (who may have created a fanpage or two around this possible coupling) very happy.

6. Noah Bennett Is Still a Bad Guy: Don’t worry. Even though HRG has been nicer lately, Jack Coleman assured me, "You’ll see plenty of villainy from HRG this year, I can promise you that." Hmmm…Maybe that has something to do with that Sylar alliance I mentioned earlier?

7. Another Eclipse Is Coming: According to James Kyson Lee, when the series’ iconic eclipse returns, it seems to reverse the power-accelerating effects of the first eclipse. He said, "Hiro’s powers aren’t working, and neither are many other people’s powers. I think we’ll see this phenomenon happens around the world and that everyone is affected by it." I spy a falling fly guy!

8. The Speedster Has a Husband and a Child in the Future: Brea Grant’s Daphne is a mom in the future. Who’s her baby daddy? "Probably with someone you know and love." Pair that with the information that Sylar’s son’s mother is "alive and silver-tongued" and you’ve got a second theory on his baby’s mama. (Still, my money’s on the fan favorite mentioned above.)

9. Maya Changes the World: According to Dania Ramirez, "I think you’re going to finally understand why Maya was even added to the cast. You’ll see how, in Suresh trying to help her, she changes the course of life, for not only him, but also for a lot of other people."

10. The Haitian Has a Family…and Secrets: The fabulous Jimmy-Jean Louis dished, "They’re introducing my brother. And it’s good for the audience because they get a little bit of information about the Haitian."

The two-hour season premiere of Heroes, Volume 3: Villains, premieres Monday on NBC at 9 p.m. Check it out and then come by here after it airs for the first Heroes Redux of the new season.

World wants Obama to be next US president

September 19, 2008
Most people across the world would prefer Democrat Barack Obama to win the US presidential election over his Republican rival John McCain, a new poll spanning 22 countries showed Tuesday.

The BBC World Service survey found the most common view in all nations polled was that Obama — who staged a euphoric European tour two months ago that included a speech to 200,000 fans in Berlin — should win in November.

An average of 46 percent of all those questioned thought US relations with the rest of the world would improve if Obama took office, compared to just 20 percent for McCain, the survey of 22,500 people found.

Global approval ratings for the United States are currently low — a BBC World Service poll earlier this year found 49 percent of people surveyed had a negative view of US influence, compared to 32 who viewed it positively.

Those most optimistic about an Obama presidency’s impact on US external relations were people in America’s NATO allies — Canada, France, Germany, Britain and Italy — as well as Australia, Nigeria and Kenya, where Obama has family.

Forty-six percent said having a black US president would "fundamentally change" their perception of the United States, and 27 percent said it would not.

"Large numbers of people around the world clearly like what Barack Obama represents," said Doug Miller, chairman of GlobeScan which conducted the poll.

"Given how negative America’s international image is at present, it is quite striking that only one in five think a McCain presidency would improve on the Bush administration’s relations with the world."

However, there is nothing to suggest Obama’s popularity abroad will bring success at home — he is neck and neck with McCain in US opinion polls, and a similar BBC survey before the 2004 US election found strong global support for John Kerry, the Democrat who eventually lost to incumbent George Bush.

In Tuesday’s poll, the margin in favour of Obama ranged from just nine percent in India to 82 percent in Kenya. On average, 49 percent preferred Obama to 12 percent in favour of McCain.

Nearly four in 10 people did not take a position, with this attitude most common in Russia, Singapore, Turkey, India and Egypt.

An average of 46 percent thought US-world relations would improve under Obama, 22 percent thought they would stay the same and seven percent thought they would get worse.

Only 20 percent thought relations would improve under McCain, although this figure was around 30 percent in China, India and Nigeria. An average 37 percent expected no change and 16 percent thought relations would get worse.

A separate poll in the United States mirrored these conclusions, with 46 percent expecting better relations under Obama and 30 percent under McCain.

The survey was carried out in July and August in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States.

Boracay, Palawan among Asia’s top vacation spots

Travelers from all over the region have chosen Boracay Island and Palawan province in the Philippines as two of the best holiday destinations in Asia this year, according to a Web poll by online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia.

The 2008 online poll showed Boracay and Palawan ranking seventh and eighth respectively in the top 10 holiday destinations in Asia. Palawan shared eighth place with Chiang Mai, Thailand. Both Philippine destinations were jointly ranked seventh in the 2007 Smart Travel Asia poll.

Boracay is famous for its white sand beaches, which make it a popular tourist spot in the country. On the other hand, Palawan is rated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as the best island destination in East and Southeast Asia region in 2007, and the 13th best island in the world having "incredibly beautiful natural seascapes and landscapes." Some of the most famous tourist spots in Palawan are the Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Coron Bay in Busuanga and the El Nido Marine Reserve Park.

The otherworldy Bali, Indonesia was chosen Asia’s top holiday destination in the Smart Travel Asia poll for the third straight year followed by Phuket, Thailand; Kerala, India; the island republic of Maldives; shopping mecca Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. Angkor, Cambodia ranked ninth place while Koh Samui, Thailand and Rajasthan, India both shared tenth place.

Smart Travel Asia said the poll results revealed the continued dominance of Thailand as a "holiday brand" with four destinations in the Top Ten, and the strong emergence of India.

The same poll also showed El Nido Resort Lagen Island in Palawan ranking among the top 25 leisure hotels and resorts in Asia this year.

According to Smart Travel Asia, the poll results reflect the online voters’ "substantial hands-on travel experience, word-of-mouth at dinnertime chats, as well as an idea of the brand drawn from advertising and editorial exposure in the media, which is mostly online." Smart Travel Asia is the region’s only dedicated online travel magazine with over one million readers worldwide.

Vijay Verghese, Smart Travel Asia editor, said voters in the annual travel poll took an average 15.5 annual air trips and earned $175,162 with roughly 60 percent based in Asia, 20 percent in UK/Europe and 20 percent in the United States.

Channing Tatum Engaged!

September 8, 2008

Channing Tatum has smooth moves on and off the dance floor—just ask his new fiancĂ©e, Jenna Dewan.

The 28-year-old hottie popped the question to the equally hot Dewan, 27, on Friday while the couple was in Maui, according to PEOPLE mag. To the bride-to-be’s surprise, Tatum had invited their close friends to the island to witness the proposal.

The pair met in 2005 on the set of the hit dance movie Step Up and started dating after the film wrapped.
